Tested devices
NodeWave is developed and checked on these four phones, which cover Android 10 to 14 and four different manufacturer skins. Every release is installed on them and the radio, the encryption, relaying, voice and photos are exercised on real hardware before it is published.
Honor View 10
Bluetooth 5.0. The strictest of the four: EMUI freezes background apps when the screen is off, so set the battery option App launch → Manage manually for NodeWave.
Xiaomi Mi Note 10
Reliable with the screen off. Needs location on for scanning (Android 11) and "Install via USB" allowed to sideload from a computer.
Sony Xperia
The first phone with the new Bluetooth permissions (scan, advertise, connect) and no location requirement.
Samsung Galaxy A52
Reference for current Android: nearby-devices permission for Wi-Fi Direct, photo picker and camera.
What has been verified
- Pairing-free discovery and chat over Bluetooth Low Energy, with the screen on and off
- End-to-end encrypted sessions, key rotation and delivery receipts
- Multi-hop relaying between phones that cannot hear each other
- Voice clips (Opus and Codec2) and photos, over Bluetooth and over Wi-Fi Direct
- Offline maps and shared positions
Not yet tested on hardware: LoRa links, long relay chains of real phones, and other manufacturers (Pixel, OnePlus, Motorola, Oppo, Vivo and others).
Is your phone not on the list?
Behaviour of the Bluetooth stack differs a lot between models. A short test with two phones tells us (and the next person) whether yours works.
